hey guys i have a 89 ford ranger 4x4 with a 2.9 and i want to swap to a 4.0 out a 90s explore i was wondering if my 2.9 trany 5 speed would bolt up to the 4.0 and what else i would need from the explore like ecu, wiering harness, computer, ext. i know the 4.0 dosent have much more power then the 2.9 but i want to do the swap because im tierd off the ticking noise the 2.9 makes thanks

Welcome to TRS.
If you go up to the top of the page you will find a box that says "technical library"
You can also try searching. This has been covered Many, Many times.
The 4.0 will bolt right in but, The 4.0 trans is much better and uses a bigger flywheel, clutch and a different starter.
The wiring requires a little splicing.
One last thing, The 4.0 is based on a 2.9. The 4.0 has the ticking from time to time as well.

thanks for the info sorry about asking a question that all ready had an answer im new to the site

Depends on the tranny, in 89 you could either have the M5OD or FM146. Both will bolt up but the FM146 won't like to live behind a 4.0.

i have the fm146 i beleave on the bootom of the tran it a drain bolt in the middel of the plate that is bolted on...is the fm146 a weak tranny

Yes they're pretty weak. I'd look for a 2.9 or 4.0 M5OD, the 2.9 tranny has a lower 1-3 gears BTW.
