302 swap 02 sensor placement

I have just welded up some 2.5 inch catless down pipes to an x pipe and glasspack for my 01 ranger 302 swap and I was wondering what the optimal upstream 02 sensor placement would be considering the missing cat

Don't you have two upstream sensors? If not, the one sensor will have to sample both sides. So as close to the engine as you can get it and still sample both sides of the engine.

Yeah I got 2 sensors I was wondering how far away from the collector they should be on both sides

Every factory setup I've ever seen put them just a few inches into y-pipe...

The factory puts them as close to the engine as possible. The O2's do not work unless they are over 500 degrees. For emissions they want the engine to go into closed loop as soon as possible, so they have to wait till the O2 sensors get hot enough. That is the factory position on their placement.

Do you care about emissions? Probably not. But the computer may have a routine (I am guessing here) that if the O2 sensors do not go into closed loop in a certain amount of time, it will turn the check engine light on and give you a O2 code. Someone else may be able to confirm this, and might know what the time period is, but if you want to copy what the factory did, put them as close to the engine as possible. Do you have a area on the collector that you could weld the bung to?

The engine is from a 98 ford explorer I don’t care about CEL or emissions and actually the 02 sensor is about 12 inches after the collector. I think I am just going to copy the OEM location. I was mainly concerned about the lack of a cat changing where the sensor would go but from what I’ve gathered the OEM position should work
