I'm trying to help a relative with his Ranger that has a pretty bad misfire. It had been sitting with the battery disconnected so there are no stored codes, but the EEC does detect the misfire.
I don't live close enough to do more in-person troubleshooting. While I was there I put a timing light on all the plug wires and both #4 wires showed intermittent spark. He has another identical parts truck that the engine was sold out of. It was described as a good runner and I installed the EEC out of it with no improvement. I unplugged injector #1 and the idle dropped, so it's probably not #1. After I had left, he installed both coils from the parts truck and tried another set of wires with no improvement. I sent him a set of injectors to try when they arrive. I don't think it's a bad fuel injector although the exhaust doesn't smell like gas and it didn't appear to be torching the cat converters, which suggests the dead cylinder isn't getting fuel.
That intermittent spark on both #4 wires, which means both coils are involved, now makes me suspect the wiring even though I did a cursory look at the coil wiring and connectors and didn't see anything obviously wrong.
What do you think?
