Hey guys I'm looking at maybe buying an 85 ranger with the 2.8. Does anyone here have one built? If so, what's the best route to go and how does it perform?

Welcome to TRS :)

2.8l info here: https://therangerstation.com/tech_library/2_8L_Performance.shtml

Pretty old technology, designed in early 1970's, rated at 115HP
But still a serviceable engine that can take alot of miles
They did have head hot spots so watch temp gauge, modification can be done when heads are off, how to in above link

The 2.8l block has the same bolt pattern as the 4.0l OHV used in 1990-2000 Rangers so it was a popular swap to get more power, 160HP with fuel injected distributorless engine

So I could get the older 4.0 and drop it in without changing the trans or motor mounts? Sounds like a fun route

Yes, go here, bookmark this page: https://therangerstation.com/tech_library/index.shtml

Click on Engine & fuel tech section

There are quite a few links for 4.0l swaps
The 2.8l and 2.9l use same block, as did the 4.0l OHV, they are all Ford Cologne V6 engines

Difference for 2.8l is that its a carburetor engine and the 2.9l and 4.0l are EFI so you do need to add a high pressure fuel pump and a Return fuel line, which the 2.9l would already have

1990-1994 4.0l OHV with computer and wiring will be easier swap than the 1995-2000 because of the older computer, EEC-IV 60 wire, in 1995 Rangers got the EEC-V 104 wire computers, still used today by Ford
