2.3 transmission recommendations

Yes, other than the change from bit main bearings to small main bearings in '86 I think the cranks are the same, supposedly can handle like 300hp stock... even the rods are the same just different pistons.

I do a lot of electrical and wiring repairs at the shop I work at, you’re definitely right. A lot can get thrown off.
Good man, sounds like it’ll be easy for you then

All you would need is a four-cylinder bell housing for your 85 2.8 transmission. Good luck finding one and if you do, I hope you find two because I need one.

Good luck with that, 2.8s were mostly used when the 2.0 four cylinder was in these, so chances of the same transmission used are much lower since the 2.3 almost always had the m5od instead of a fm145 or any other one

The M5OD didn’t come along until 88 and even then it was an option with the fm146 as the base unit. Even if it’s a 2 Wheel Dr. trans it doesn’t matter. All we need is the bell housing.

Well yeah the 2.0 was replaced in 1989 so they would line up pretty easily

Which transmission did those have ?
They were identical to the 2.3 Lima as they just bored out the block to get a little more power out of the engine they already had.

The only issue is after '98 the speedometer cable hole was removed from the tail housing so no speedo on '97 and older rigs... You pretty much want to stick to the '87ish through '97 year range for a 4x2 Lima transmission, as said above the 2.0L will work too and they had the M5OD for a year or so and the 2.0L was offered in Canada through '90...
