I am putting a 1997 explorer 5.0l v8 engine into a 2003 2.3l Ranger xl. I would like to keep the interior wire harness of the Ranger and use it for the swap. The 1997 explorer does not have Pats, but the 2003 Ranger does. Is there a way to use the Rangers interior wire harness and have no Pats wiring issues with this swap.

See if someone else chimes in, but since you will not be using the 2003 ECM, I would think the PATS system would not be an issue.

I have heard of people saying the Pats system would not be an issue because I'm using the engine bay wire harness and ECM from the 1997 5.0l, but the Pats wiring runs through the main connection of the interior wire harness to the fire wall. So, the plug-in on the fire wall has the Pats wiring in it, will the 1997 5.0l engine bay side of the plug not have any pins for the Pats wiring or are the wires and pins to something else?

From what I understand, the PATS has a module near the steering column that picks up the key, and that PATS module communicates with the ECM directly. If the PATS module does not send the correct signal to the ECM that has the PATS programming inside it, the ECM will not let the engine start.

Thing of it is, if you are going to be installing a older ECM without the PATS, it doesn't care about the PATS signal, there is no wiring for it and no programming for it in the older system. So even if the PATS module says "don't start, something is not right" it is not communicating with anything that cares. You will be re-wiring and using the older computer system, so when it see's key-on power and the tach signals from the ignition system, it's ready to go.

Didn't 97 already have PATS optional tho? Just a different version than newer stuff?

Good to know.

You're probably thinking of the RAP system - Remote Anti-theft Personality module. The key was not chipped. But there was an anti-tamper switch at the ignition cylinder that would change a resistance that the RAP module looked for. Also included various switches at doors, tailgate and hood. I may have to deal with this in my current project. But I think it will be easy to delete.

Never even heard that term before. A quick google search suggests both can be in the same vehicle. That doesn't seem right.

There is no PATS section in the 1996 Explorer EVTM. Doesn't mean other vehicles didn't have both. But the Explorer didn't that year.
