Is it possible to be pulling air into the cooling sytem via a blown lower intake gasket?

I replaced the coolant temp sensor in my 99 4.0l Ranger, now my temp gauge fluctuates, the upper rad hose pulses and somtimes both the upper and lower rad hoses collapse. Any help would be much appreciated supposed to go on a road trip soon. Thanks
