ok today i was changing my valve cover gaskets on my 88 ranger and found that i have a 89 2.9 engine.my cousin was the 1st owner and is not mechanicly enclined enough to swap out the engine or heads. so i have a 1st gen truck with a 2nd gen engine. how often do you see a truck like this.

Could just be a very late 88 which would be an 89.

Doesn't mean anything. They build engines and assemble trucks at different plants.

Like Will said. My '84 (which was carbureted) came with the hole in the firewall and pas. side kick panel for the EFI ECM which came out in '85.

I work a parts counter and I've learned that ford especially is notorious for using new stuff in older models or using older stuff into newer years. Most likely a cost efficient way of using resources. Helps to explain them not needing handouts from the government

Mines an 88 with a 1.21 gigawatts Flux Capaciter... whoda thunk it.:dunno:

Yup, that's more or less exactly how it was explained to me by one Ford rep once. They use up parts from the last MY to avoid wasting the parts and money.

If they have to make enough of them they just call it a Heritage Edition (see the F-150)

hahahah! heritage....

You need to upgrade that to 10,000 jigawatts!:icon_rofl::icon_rofl::icon_thumby:

That's better then the belt diagram I was looking at on the rad support of at a 3.7L Jeep Liberty, it had a diagram for a 3.9L, 4.7L, and a 5.7L. Three engines that, to my knowledge, were never available in the Liberty, and the rad support, again, to my knowledge, can only be used on a Liberty. Ford might make things odd by using different years, but at least they have some logic in doing so.

I think I saw a liberty with a 3.9L badge one, but I know the 4.7 and 5.7 were never options. Sounds like it got a GC sticker.
