Wohlf 16's 99 Ranger build

Im guessin that the pinion on an 8.8 is different than the 9 inch but if not is it possible to take the flange (not sure if thats the proper term for it but thats what im callin it for now) on the 8.8 and putting it on the nine inch?
If I understand what your saying on the u-joints bein the same you guys are telling me to take the adapter flange thing off the end of my drive shaft and attaching it to the nine inch by using the little u-bolts like I have on my front drive shaft?
I hate to eliminate any more length on my drive shaft cause its almost to short as it is.

I just checked and I have a pic on page 5 at the bottom of how my drive shaft is on my 8.8. Its the pic of it that has the exhaust tip hangin down (my buddys are now callin it my trucks pecker). Thats what I mean about it havin a flange unlike the nine inch having a fixed yoke. And if I can take the flange off the 8.8, Ive got know problem with taken the 8.8 apart. Prolly couldnt get anything for an open 8.8 with 3.73s anyways.

yes

Are you gearing the 9"? If so, see if the pinion splines are the same as on the 8.8. If they are you may be able to get away with using the 8.8 flange on the 9". Doubt it though.

I hope to not be regearing. I got the axle free from my buddy that upgraded to a dana 60 and supposedly its already got 5.13s in it. I think I will try it the way your tellin me for now then later have a shaft made up.
Thanks guys, will post up some pics when I get it done.

I guess I was asking if you were regearing cause if you take the yoke off you'll have to set the pinion preload again. Not a huge deal with the 9", but it wouldn't be an issue at all if you were regearing in the process.

Alright got the truck trailored over to my buddys house. Got a few issues Im gonna have to check out. Steering wheel is sideways when Im driving straight. Not a big deal. But my spedometer isnt working unless I didnt go fast enough for it to register. I got her up to at least 35 and it didnt budge. Looks like the gears in the 9 inch are 4.88s instead of 5.13s. Not a big deal will still be a hell of an approvement over 3.73s.
This saturday hope to replace the bad axle seal on the 9 inch. Weld up some new perches. Weld on a new shock mount for the 9 inch to locate the shocks in the bronco location. Remove 8.8 and hopefully start to put the 9 inch in.
Oh pickin up my flat top chevy knuckles tomorrow. That steering setup I got now is a little scary.
Maybe get some pics next week.

no the 8.8 flange will not go onto the 9" pinion. I'm telling you to take the flange off of the U-joint on the d-shaft and run it that way.

Yeah I knew what you were talkin about. Im just hoping that when I remove it that it wont make my drive shaft to short. I think it should be fine for now at least.

if that little bit effects it then your shaft was already going to have problems anyways. You also must consider the 8.8 has a longer pinion i think, and its higher. so you may end up with a d-shaft too short.

I dont wanna keep that 8.8 in there so I guess I will just have to do it then figure things out from there. Let you guys know how things go saturday morning. And hopefully I can remember a camera.

Well I got the nine inch swapped in and the brake lines run. Took the flange off the drive shaft and it looks like it is gonna be long enough. Just need to get some u-bolts for the rear drive shaft. Any suggestions on which vehicles share the same u-joints before I start layin in the mud at junk yards lookin under every damn vehicle? I tried takin some off a dually chevy rear end cause it was already pulled off the truck. Looked perfect until I got back home and they were to big. Another thing. Does anybody thats swapped out the 8.8 in a 98 + ranger have a speedo? I read that my speedometer works off my rear diff sensor. Guess I can just guess but would kinda like to have an idea.

Got the nine inch under it and man does gearing make a friggin difference. The 4.86s make it feel like a missle. Steering still scares the sh!t outta me but that will be fixed in the near future. Got some pics.

new u joint straps are 5 bux

you have a trac bar on it?

thats one thing i like about the 78-9 d60.

its easy to make it a bolt in swap on a ttb chassis. 50-70 dollar hi steer arm and alot of drilling gets it awn for a trail rig....depending on spring selection likely need to fab a trac-bar still for the road though.

thats why i asked about the t bar..
