best locker?

ok, so since i am putting a locker in the rear end, i NEED it to be able to hold up to most anything. and well i haven't heard very many good things about the lunch box lockers for the rear. i've been figuring i should just stick with detriot, but i plan on running 37's(i already bought em) and 4.56 gears in a 8.8 31 spline with disc brakes. it has a factory l/s... anyways, i'm looking for quality, and if you know of where i could get one for a reasonable price cause so far the cheapest locker i've found has still been 550 plus.

or if i'm wrong about the lunch box lockers please enlighten me!

The Aussie is $260 new, easy to install by yourself and as bullet-proof as is possible. If you want full-lock with great street manners I don't believe there is a cheaper solution. I guess it boils down to whether or not you want full-lock.

An aussie is a great locker for a lunchbox style, probably the best there is....BUT, and ...there's a big one, it DOESN'T replace the weak carrier that the 8.8 has.

Oh, and crappy winter roads today....Dual Detroits FTW!!!

I think an 8.8 carrier is strong enough.

I think the Lockright is smoother than the Detroit. I've had Lockrights in my truck for 7-8 years. Lockright is easy to install and cheap. My truck plows snow, manuevers trailers on my hill where my big 2wd won't do it--these are things that put a lot of force on the axles. I don't worry about anything breaking in the rear.

In a BII thats a given, but in an ex cab 4L powered truck on 37's? Not argueing the point, just throwin that questin out there...?

ARB airlocker

I honestly cannot see why anyone would waste that much money for a rear locker. For a front differential I would fully agree that is probably the best locker for the job.

Myself, I just didn't feel comfortable with my 28 spline 8.8 and lockright with my 36" SX's. I don't like having weak links that can leave you stranded (really did not like the idea of all that stress being on the cross shaft). The 31 spline 8.8 and detroit fixed that problem for me.

well i found a detriot true trac or whatever the other not complete full carrier replacement locker for like 260, i'd go with that first.

x2

i do on occasion romp and stomp the gas on the street when some ricer wants to race... so i'm pretty sure i'd rip it to peices if i did put a lunch box locker in there, i mean the price tag is sure tempting, don't get me wrong. but im in this to do it right the first time so i don't have to re-do the rearend because i blew the guts up. AND at some point, i'm figuring i'm gonna be putting a supercharger on the 4L and well the idea of the cross shaft not being able to take that extra power makes me worried to say the least.

basically, i know my driving habits, and usually for me stronger is better:icon_twisted:

IMO... as for the ARB, no chance will i spend that much on an air locker and then have to get everything set up so i can actually use it, i'd go with an OX locker before i'd get an ARB.

37's?
1st choice? Detroit
2nd choice? Detroit
3rd choice? Detroit

And in case I didn't mention it a Detroit might also work for you.

You WON'T "rip it to pieces."

A 4.0 is a 225ft# motor. You aren't romping it on the street and destroying your 28-spl 8.8. After 8 years of working and wheeling, seems like if it were delicate the cumulation of odds would have broken it, even on 31s. I had 35" Hawgs on it during a winter round-up--and I trailer my truck out there and try to kill it when I go wheeling. I've seen welded 7.5s last with 35s. It's not exactly a delicate object. You'll break the front 20x before the rear goes out.

If you want to improve your axle strength you need the 31-splines. I wouldn't buy a detroit for a 28-spline axle. I would put in a Lockright and if it does break, then upgrade the axle. But I don't think you'll break it unless you are a serious wheeler--like banging through big rocks in low range, not splashing through mud holes. If you are a frequent and serious wheeler, then it's worth the money. If you are an occasional one, it is a waste of at least 1,000 bucks.

i do have the 31 spline. put it in over the summer, and yes i splash in mud holes for right now, but thats because im still in college. but once i get done with college its my wheeling rig and i'm hoping to pick up a ford 3/4 or 1 ton with the 7.3L powerstroke to tow it around with

i wanna do it right the first time not the second or third time

Do you have the Factory L/S, or is it open??

Then put in the Detroit.

This is coming from a guy that HAD a lockright.

What failed on your Lockright? Some people don't check the side-to-side play and it gets chewed up or they don't use a hardened pin.

Replacing the carrier means you need to set the gears up. Maybe you can just bolt the ring gear to the new carrier and it's okay, but if it's not you've done a lot of damage.

Buy the Lockright now if you need better traction, and it's installed in an hour or two. It's not going to break if you ensure your axle isn within tolerance and use the hardened pin which is now included, I believe. When you get out of college, spend the money and sell the Lockright.

I'm not saying a Lockright is better than a Detroit. I'm saying it might, right now, be more economical and practical. And once it's in there, you may find that it will stay in there because you'll forget about it.
