I have a problem with the 2.9, when first starting the motor it runs great. After driving it for a lil it starts to miss bad then goes away then misses more and seems like it starts running on 4 or 5 cylinders, and its eating up gas more, the oil light pops on and off but it has oil. After parking it and letting it sit for like ten mins it runs better then goes back to running like crap.

can anybody give me an idea wat to look for or wat the problem may be? would like to know asap considering it my DD.

I have the same problem as you....I have changed the ignition module, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor button....some say its the map sensor, fuel pump, fpr....take your choice.

Is ur truck running any better after all that? Currently i was driving it for bout 20 miles and it ran great so far, just waiting for it to act up but im going to change the plugs, wires, tfi, airfilter, fuel fiter and im going to check out the cat and 02 sensor and see if i find nething there. Im pretty sure the fuel pumps are good but ill look at the relay tooo and grounds. ill let u know wat i come up with thanks

getting the codes will help heard you in a direction of the cause.

check your grounds and for vacuum leaks

pull the little vacuum line off the FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator)
see if gas driblbes out of it....IF so..replace the FPR. the FPR could be still be bad but that is a fast way to check it.

the other thing you could be having restriction from the catalitic converter or colapesing baffle in the muffler.

ok so i checked the grounds, they all seemed good, but my bro got shocked by sumthing on the right fender when resting his arm the side of the truck. But i went ahead and changed the oil&filter, and airfiter. The oil came out like black paint haha so the last owner didnt change that much, and the airbox was caked with mud, the airfilter looked like it hadnt been changed in years cuz it was dark brown and the whole thing was warped along with the screen being rusted. After all that, started the truck and it ran good, nice n smooth, then drove it for about and hr or so and havent had a problem yet. Idk if doing those lil tune ups helped. Next for sure is the plugs and wires since the wires feel like they are going to fall off so that means the plugs cant be in that good of shape. Guess c wat happens next, thanks

was your bro on the passanger side?? He may have inadvertantly touched the soleniod near the battery....or he could of been hit with static electricity, winter time really increased that.

glad to hear its running better....amazing what some good general maintence can do. +10 on finishing the tune up with plugs, wires cap & rotor.

It ran great for 20 miles so it's not the exhaust.
It had plenty of time to heat up.

I'd never use an 88 BII or Ranger as my DD unless I had to.
Get a small used import for your DD and use the truck for trips to Home Depot or the lake. You will pay for the car in fuel/repair cost savings.

why never had a problem with my ranger except for having to replace the clutch

ha i take back what i said, it acted up today...so next in line is going to be the fuel filter

Dont forget about the fuel pressure regulator. Mine was bad and causing all sorts of problems, not to mention a good amount of gas in the brake booster.

ok so we changed the wires and plugs, and after doing that the truck spits now going through gears but, it idles fine...still have to change the fuel filter n possibly the regulator?

Fuel filter never hurts, recommended if it's old or you don't know. Regulator - only if it's a problem.
