I’m very happy to report that I pretty much drove up and drove back this year. You always expect little stuff after 320,000 miles, but fortunately no fixing the truck on the side of the road this time.
The big one was I ran over a tire tread on the road. It made a racket, but the truck rolled over it just fine. It flipped up behind the truck and caught the storage box under the trailer bed solid right in the front. Part of my own brain fart when I installed it, but the bolts holding it to the bottom of the deck we just bolted through the Aluminum, without any backing plate. I’ve got a lot of weight in it. The shock ripped them out, and also dented my fender a little bit. It won’t be a big deal to repair.
With a couple of the bolts still hanging, I tied it up pretty well with some ratchet straps and made it home without further issue.
I’m not sure if it’s from the tire tread or not, but another driver reached out on the CB and told me my trailer had no lights. When I stopped and checked it out, the electrical coupler was out. I put it back in and everything worked. But then it came out a second time, I don’t know why. So I rigged it with a bungee just to hold it in. No other issues on the trip. I’ll give it a little more permanent attention.
I don’t want to fault any one state, because I realize it’s a weather issue, but after you go over the mountains coming from Atlanta, some of the highways really suck. The far left stop/brake 4” LED light on the trailer crapped out, two weak LEDS instead of the 16 or 20, and I’m sure it’s from the vibration. A couple of times it was like riding down a railroad track on the ties without the rails.
I’m assuming also from the vibration, the removable cover plate for my wiring Grand Central on the trailer is on the highway somewhere between Carlisle and Atlanta. I hope it’s next to the one that I lost last year so at least it has company. I’m going to have to re-figure out how to latch that one down.
And if anybody is traveling up 85, 77, or 81, please keep your eyes open for the bottom of the leg of my barstool. It vibrated off somewhere heading up there.
But it was all worth it, the people and the cars and the trucks were great, and I thanked my team for helping me win the award with some fresh kibbles when we got home
