Insurance

19walt93 what's the beef with progressive?

I'm a little confused by your numbers too. Adding a vehicle has never reduced my total cost, just like Walt pointed out.

It's suuuuuper common up here for whatever reason, mabey different states make a difference?

A guy I work with got a new project car awhile back the day before payday. He had money to put plates on it but no money to insure it... and REEEEAAAALLLLYYYY wanted to drive it that day.

I told him he could likely add it to his existing policy and actually save money.. he immideately told me I was full of shit.

Apparently though.. he listened to my advice. The next day (when he rolled up to work in project shtbox) he told me that when he got home the day before he called his insurer and found out that not only could he add it to his policy that day free of charge.. but it would save him 200 bucks a year.

Toldjaso dude.

Sucks for you guys though. Move to Maine lol.

I think it gets cheaper, because you can't drive more than one car at a time, if you're the only person being insured. Having multiple cars and multiple driver's ( i.e. wife and kids ) will increase the payment for sure.

My dad (Arkansas) had A F150, a Dodge Caravan, and a 80 something Trans Am. When he dropped the TA, his insurance went up $20 per month. When he asked why, they explained that the risk increases with less vehicles.

They might be considering your beater your primary and your newer vehicle your secondary.

I remember something in my past where the beater did lower my payment because I was using it as my primary vehicle.

There is more than one way to skin a cat. And the insurance agent often isn’t going to volunteer that information. They might tell you about ways to save if you ask specifically enough but most won’t volunteer anything unless it’s going to make a sale or keep you from cancelling your policy.

I've always used a third party agent or whatever. I've switched Insurance companies 2 or 3 times over the years because they always wanna find you the best deal.

If you have multiple vehicles the chance of getting any particular one in an accident is reduced by half assuming you use them the same and one driver only. The insurance co's exposure really doesn't go up, in theory.
Plus they probably figure if you have more than one vehicle you are likely working on one of them so that's less driving.

They want to argue over every nickel on the estimate and try to get the body shops to cut corners, pushing aftermarket and used parts where OEM should be used to preserve rust warranties and fit and finish. In NH, vehicles 2 years old or newer can only be repaired with new OEM body parts by law. When they dispute an estimate the adjuster will always be too busy to come back in a reasonable time to hash out the differences- making repairs take too long and they blame the shop for wanting to do "the most expensive" repair- meaning a good job.
Their Snapshot device plugs into the data link and created all kinds of problems that Progressive denied could have been caused by their spy device- even after we preproduced the 52 dtcs by plugging it back in. The customer said every light on her dash was lit and I assumed she was exaggerating. Nope, the 52 dtcs were scattered through every module on the vehicle.
Their claim to fame is that their rates are cheap, ever hear the expression if you pay peanuts you'll get monkeys?

...if I insured only my truck I would pay like 1500 bucks a year. By adding another car to that policy I only pay around 1100 a year.. how is that more expensive?

Same thing with my wheeler policy.. it was 320$ last year for just the 4 wheeler, added a motorcycle onto it for this year, dropped to 240$
That sounds nuts, there's no such thing as a free lunch. I hope you really have coverage.

Sort of on subject and sort of not, I've tried the State Farm version of Progressive's Snap Shot. It wasn't going to save me any money. It also didn't cause any code issues.

The thing is with those programs is there is so many parameters you have to meet to get a good discount that it might be impossible for you to really get one. The thing that dinged me was the hours that I drive. They didn't like me driving at 5-5:30 in the morning. I told the agent, it's the schedule set at work and I'm military. I can't tell them I need to switch my schedule so my insurance is cheaper. There was nothing they could do about it.

You also had to brake very softly and smoothly. Accelerate very softly and smoothly. It monitored your speed according to what a GPS system said the speed is supposed to be. And other things. Other than the hours I drive, I was getting high marks and it would have saved me $60. The charge for using the device was $60. So, it was of no benefit to me at all and I had a back seat driver nit picking everything I did. It wasn't a huge change from the way I drive or the speeds I drive but that isn't the point.

I have 5 vehicles with Progressive, have been with them for like 12 years now, with me and the wife and the 5 rigs it's just under $1800 a year which is BS but it's what you get, back when I was shopping around everyone else was way more. It's gone up and down especially over the last couple years, at the beginning of the rona when less people were driving it was closer to $1600 but now it's about to the peak it's been at $1850ish...

I've had decent luck, I got rear ended and dealt with a DIY claim a couple years ago since I wasn't going to take the '97 to a shop for a tailgate dent they gave me like $550ish with little effort on my part... I spent a couple hours on it and got the dents 75% out which is good enough for me...

Interesting. Your insurance company doesn't ask you to prove that you own what you are trying to insure?

Nope. They ask for year/make/model, ask if it's modified, ask if it gets parked outside or in a garage, ask for money, print my cards, and thank me for my business.

It's been awhile since I needed to make a claim... but I dont even remember ever needing to prove ownership during claims processing. Relatively sure they just sent their guy out to take pictures, he asked where I wanted to send it to get fixed, and told me I was good to go.

For the longest time my fiances parents had her car on their policy, they definitely didn't own it. Insurance companies don't care, they just wanna get paid.

My insurance company wants pictures of the car, inside and out, odometer reading, a proof of ownership. Before Covid, they would physically want to see the car, in person.

That's unbelievable. Why would anyone pay to insure a car they didn't own? You'd need a police report of an accident to file a claim anyway and they'd check the registration. I've never been asked for proof of ownership and the only car I've shown them was my Mustang. It's insured as a collector car based on an appraisal so they wanted a picture for the file.
