2010 4x4 XLT: If I keep it long term, what parts should I stock away?

Eight years ago I bought this 2010 XLT 4x4 and it has been a great truck. But my wife's Edge is fully loaded and the comfort amentities are attractive - especially the heated and lumbar adjustable seats. So of late I've begun "browsing" the new generation of Rangers.

The modern amenities are also pricey! Sticker-shock alone makes my humble and long-since paid for truck look a lot better. The way I see it, $35,000 + on a Lariat to get seats I like better is a lot of change for something that simple. So that, and the fact the new Rangers are 8/10's of an F150 are shy-away points. I can easily reach over into the bed of my current truck, and can see into the bottom of the tool box without a step-stool. To maintain that type of convenience, it seems my options boil down to keep the current Ranger, or switch to a Frontier.

The 2010 was still under warranty when I bought it in 2012 and joined here. Since then I've done all the routine maintenance on schedule. A few other items have been necessary along the way: the thermostat housing has been replaced, and the radiator was replaced before a cross-country trip four years ago. The upper and lower control arms, ball joints, and all the bushings in the front end have been done. It basically drives like new. Of late I've been thinking that if I retro-fitted a set of electric and heated seats, and put an Explorer console in it, that it might get me the feel I want without expending a wad of coin on a new one.

So back to the parts question: I read or heard somewhere years ago that manufacturers hold to a 10 year window on parts inventory and availability. Is that true, and if yes, what exactly does that mean for the future in terms of finding parts for the 2010?

If I opt to keep the 2010 for a while, what parts should I just buy and stash in the shed? Spare alternator? Another radiator? Or something else?

Feedback on the parts question will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, and best New Year's wishes to all,

Rick

There's no parts on a 2010 ranger that can't still easily be found and there will probably be no shortage of parts for the next 50 years. There's millions of them still on the road. The "10 year thing" is nonsense. Sometimes ford will discontinue making parts after a certain amount of time but A. This does not mean the aftermarket companies stop making parts. As long as they can sell them, they will make them. And B. alot of parts are used on many vehicles so say you need an fuel injector for a 1994 ranger, it could be a part still made and used on a 2020 ford fusion so Ford will obviously still have them available.

There's no parts worth hoarding for a ranger.

For the record I can still get most parts for my 1965 Mustang at the local parts store...

X 2....there are millions of new parts sitting in warehouses all over the US.
You can still buy new parts from Ford dealers for even early models. Speciality warehouses deal in NOS (new/old stock) and you can still buy brand new seat foam, seat covers, seat parts, ect.
2010...wouldn't worry one second as to parts availability.

and btw, the Nissan reliability has taken a hard turn to the south the past few years, so I would not touch a Frontier under any circumstances.

The guys above are right. Most of the mechanical parts and many of the odds and ends are readily available today, be it at your local parts store or the internet. However, there are likely going to be some harder to find parts or accessories that you will not be able to get as time goes on. Some interior trim pieces might be hard to come by NEW, but could easily be sourced at a salvage yard. Some of the Ford factory accessories (remote start, bed extender, etc.) may not be made anymore, but the used market may still have them. Usually its the accessories that tend to stop being made after 10 years. For instance, I had a hard time finding the tail light guards for my truck back in 2011 when the trucks were still being made.

I think as long as you can keep the rust from eating away your truck, you will probably be able to keep it for many years to come.

Ford discontinued all cars. There is no 2020 Fusion.

They still make the Mustang, and the fake (gag puke vomit poopie) Mustang Electric. Bleah, upchuck, !!!!!!!

If Carroll Shelby had been alive to see one, he would have gone over to Chevy.

E~Stang must be for those who can only dream of a Shelby GT500?

There are parts I hoard for mine.

Any good tan armrests door pulls I find in the JY I keep. I haven't seen any worth nabbing in two years as my "parts supply" is drying up. Same for door panels (I have only found one pair worth dragging home) After 30+ years aftermarket won't touch this stuff. Same for knobs for the lights and lighter if they have good printing, and the knobs for the fuse panel.

As they get older good sheetmetal is hard to find too... but a '12 has it made for that. Doors, beds and cabs ran forever with little to no change.

Maybe keep an eye out for seats, after 10 years or so they usually start wearing thin. There for awhile I know the CC buttons fall apart. If you want headed seats I think you can retrofit them to about anything. Otherwise tackle it as it comes unless you plan on keeping the thing until it is 30-40 years old.

What I would give to be junkin' for first gen parts in '95...

I was considering a frame-off resto for my 2006 Ranger. You don't see much of that for the Ranger. From the tailgate to the trans mount is probably straight forward mechanics and body work, including the frame. You may have to weld extra braces if the trans mount/torque rod area is badly rusted. Converting to a 289 carbed system would be tempting for me. I figure 17000 for the job, maybe less if some of the drivetrain is good.

But hey, simply a rebuild with original stock parts would get you a new vehicle and 20 years.

I thought 19 was the last year. My dealership hasn't gotten a new Fusion in in over 14 months.
