My key fob on my 2002 Ranger works fine but once the engine is running warming up in the winter, I can't use it to unlock the doors. What would cause this issue?

Do the lock/unlock buttons on the doors themselves still function normally?

Maybe it's designed to not work when the ignition is on? I've never tried to use mine that way.

I checked mine this morning and it does work with the motor running. Don't know how much difference there is between '11 and '02 as far as the electrical system.

Every Ford I have owned or family owned over the past 30 years has worked with the engine running if equipped with factory remote locks.

There is some programmability with the key fob and how they work, but that is the extent of my knowledge. Maybe take a look at the Owner Manual page 109.

Just so I understand, you didn't mention it was a remote start, but I have to assume it is otherwise you would have to get in the truck to start it which means you would have to get out of the truck and lock the doors - but then you would have to have the key in your hand........and I'm confused which is not unusual at all:unsure:

If it is a remote start then all bets are off.

No it is not a remote start key fob. You go out in the cold, start the truck, detach just the remote door lock key fob (quick detach setup), go back inside finish getting ready to leave 10 minutes or so and then go out to a somewhat warm truck. Its very nice when it's 20° or colder outside.
