It's a mysterious substance that music (sound) could be recorded on from an analog recording device. The vinyl recording could then be placed on a rotating machine (record player / turntable) that would decode the recorded information which would then be amplified and broadcast through speakers for people to hear it. This was one of the predecessors of the modern practice of playing music from digital recordings such as mp3 files.
