Help Please, ive got a 92 ranger 2wd regular cab shortbed and i just did a body lift on the bed and it wasnt too hard other then the fact my filler hose doesnt reach. My buddy is a welder so we made the lift out of 1 1/2 inch pipe wiht washers welded on each end. We are doing the cab this weekend and i want to make sure the 3 inch lift isnt gonna mes up anything with the steering or anything, ive always lowered stuff never lifted so this is all new to me. Also will my stock gears turn the 33 inch swampers i got a good deal on? Help a newbie out please.

What gears do you have? Unless they're 4.10s stock gears will not turn 33s well. Even 4.10s is pushing it.

You may need a steering extension. I can't say for sure.

Welcome to TRS.

well i think that theyr 3.08's but im not sure right now, and about the steering extesion, where do i get one and are they really expensive?

about the steering extension, is it something i can build because i just looked at one on James Duff and it was like $189.00 and i'm kinda on a tight budget.

you shouldbe able to fab something for a steering extention, not sure what you have for stearing, but it seems to me since you have a buddy with a welder you should be able to cut the sector and measure the rod and find a piece of schedule 40 pipe with the same inside diameter, measure the length giving your self at least one inch overlap on the pipe, mark where the pipe slides over the sector and then take pieces out to weld. considering that things might be oily make sure everything is clean before welding

My PA bodylift came with the steering extension. I also made an extension for my 4x4 lever so it wasn't way down in the boot.

well if anyone is still watchin this we put the rest of the body lift on and other than the fact that it ripped my chassis ground off of the block everything went ok. i had to remove my fan shroud and mess with the 5spd shift a lil but everything seems to be ok, but one thing, about every half turn of the steering wheel it squeks a little bit and has a little resistance, does this mean i need to extend it? thanks for the help guys.

yes, witha 3" body lift u do need a steering extension, u could prolly get it seperatly from peformance accessories for like $20 if u were to call them

what happens if i dont put the steering extension on?

it will put undue stress on the ragjoints in ur steering shaft causing premature failure and a possible accident if it happens on road

ok, with that said, ive been driving it for 2 days now and im a little worried cause i aint got nothin else to drive. i cannot seem to find the extension outside of a kit, can anybody send me a link to where i can find one? Or does anybody have pictures of ones theyve extended themselves? thanks guy, you may have just saved my life.

The steering shaft just isnt long enough without the extension so it is an absolute must. I fabbed one up out of some square hollow stock for the female end and some solid stock for the male end, welede them together and drilled holes to bolt up the the two ends of the steering shaft.
this is the bes pic i have of it. its the peice between the two bolts. the metal is about twice as thick as the steering shaft and way more solid. I've had it on over a year now with zero problems.

thanks alot, tommorow after school ill try and fab one of those up, if all goes well, then i can wheel on saturday:icon_thumby: thats alot guys its nice havin people around who know how to do this stuff right.

Even with the extension mine is a little lumpier than it was before, not bad but for the first couple times out you could notice the difference. The shaft from the steering wheel and the shaft going to the gearbox stay at the same angle, so raising the one up will make the the rag joint eat up the difference. It will never be quite the same as it was unlifted, but you get used to it after awhile.

so do i extend it between the steering wheel and the rag joint or between the rag joint and the steering box? thnkx guys.
