Might as well revive this thread for a little while again.

The top one is my H&R Sidekick .50cal muzzleloader with its new cousin, a Marlin 336C in the good old 30-30. I have a simple leather sling on it now, and I do want to get a peep sight for it.

My next "gotta have" only in .45LC

that 30-30 looks a lot like mine. i wanna get a replacement stock for mine tho. the original is slightly worn but i don't wanna refinish is. i'd rather leave it alone. i don't use it much anymore anyways. mainly my savage 110 30-06, ported barrel. sweet gun!

I've got that exact same Marlin too. Mine's got an el-cheapo scope on it and its killed its fair share of deer. Great little gun in brush country.

i just took the scope off mine. since i only use it in the brush now. i use that 30-06 for long range.

but the 30-30 is great for brush. or if i'm walking around the woods just looking (during season). easy to throw up and shoot. open sights and you can find them quicker than w/ a scope

Yeah - You're probably right - it's just the way I got it. I'd love to have a 30-06, my other "long range" rifle is a .243 - ok on small stuff, but doesn't have the oomph of a 30-06.

That savage 110 30-06; will shoot 500 yards with little drop. I hit a 100 yard target at 500 yards braced against a tree. That Ported barrel and a good scope. And it's awesome!

I suggest the savage 110 over a browning a-bolt. Mainly bc of "bang for buck" thing.. The new savage 110 is even sweeter than mine if the barrel is ported. Only thing I don't like about the new 110 is the synthetic stock

when you get a browning, you're paying for that stupid deer head outline. they are way overpriced. i'd rather have a remington 700 or a savage any day

what's a ported barrel? you mean fluted?

what kind of problems and what kind did you have? i've had 2 and never had a problem. i got rid of one back when i was unemployed (still kicking myself for that) and have a 700P now. the 700p is a higher end rifle which may be why i've never had a problem.

Ported is where it has small holes drilled into the end of the barrel to relieve pressure. Supposed to be great but I have never really been around a gun that has had it.

If I wanna sit on a hill and wait for something stupid to walk out infront of me I have my 91/30. If I wanna try to sneak up on something I have either my shotgun (primary hunting gun) or now the 336. Last winter with 2 feet of snow it was hard to do either, nothing came out on its own ... and it is hard to sneak around in 2' of snow with a nice crust on it.

Most shots happen under 200yds, which is fine with the 30-30.

I would like to get a nice Savage in .270 with a scope at some point, but as of right now I don't have much of a need for it. I want to get a smokeless pistol because it gets old cleaning my black powder ones after every day of hunting.

Mine seems to be ok, but there are a lot of unhappy people out there about what Remington has done to the brand. Over the weekend I looked at one at Scheels in Des Moines. Was marked a 336C (walnut wood) had birch wood with screwed up checkering on the stock and a big glob of finish on the forearm. At least the store tagged and priced as a W (birch wood). Another one that was actually a C didn't have the front sights lined up, it looked like there was 1/8" difference between the two. From what people are saying on the interenet, it is par for the course after Remington bought out Marlin/H&R and moved production to Ilion. That is why the only new Remington I will own is a replica of a 19th century gun, they just strike me as a very stupidly run outfit. If I had known about their problems beforehand (internet is swamped with great reviews from before the takeover) I wouldn't have thought twice about getting a Mossberg 464 instead.

ok, i figured if he didnt mean fluted then that's what it was. some company in georgia or arkansas makes muzzle brakes that work like that. supposedly it sends the recoil straight back into your shoulder and reduces the amount the muzzle jumps around during recoil.


i have heard a lot of problems with the remington/marlin fiasco. it's unfortunate. the BS trigger problem didnt help either.

Yeah - the trigger thing - my .243 is a 700BDL, but it's old. I need to check into that. I haven't shot it enough to worry about it, but now my boys are interested in going to the range and somehow, the crustyold range manager frowns on random firings going off.

I'll give a better reply when I'm not working and on my phone.

But by ported I mean-- it has slots in the end of the barrel. Very small. Almost across from each other. Helps the barrel stay straight. Sends recoil straight back. Makes it louder also lol.

My problems with the rem 700 was bullets didn't wanna feed right. Even made shorter bullets as I reload everything! Didn't matter what bullet or what I did. Both of them gave me problems..

I bought a Dan wesson .357 8.25 inch barrel from my dad. Well he bought it from an uncle that needed money real bad. So he sold my dad the pistol. The year after I bought it from my dad we were down at his house. He told dad "I got an offer you can't refuse for that .357". Dad said it's Ben's. Not mine. So he walked out with a savage 110 with syn stock. And it even had a redfield wide angle 3x9 scope on it. How could I say no????

So later I traded the stock for a wood one later on with my cousin. And I LOVE this rifle.
