Just installed new water pump, put everything back together, start filling it with antifreeze and its leaking between block and pump. Took it back apart, removed the gasket, used blue rtv instead. I have it bolted back up and waiting for it to cure. I had cleaned off the surface as best I could the first time. Should I have tried using the gasket again? How long should I let rtv cure before filling? Any other suggestions or recommendations welcome. I'm gonna start reconnecting the hoses and pray it doesn't leak again...

Did you use RTV with the gasket? You should have. However, the RTV should be fine without the gasket make sure you insert all the bolts had snug them then go through and give them a good torque. The RTV should be good to go afte an hour and fully cured in 24 (I think thats what the packages says). Good luck.

I always used just rtv. It should be good immediately once you bolt it down, go ahead and fill it and see if it leaks.

I used just rtv without gasket. I thought I saw a small drip on the corner, so I smeared a little more rtv on that corner and it stopped. Its been holding tight since. I filled it up and drove it around the block and its good. I'm not sure if I should drive it to my girlfriend's tonight or if I should let the rtv cure first.

I've always used the red high temp gasket goop (silicone) on water pumps and never had one leak...it's doesn't work too good when it contacts gasoline, but that shouldn't affect the water pump...

Just to sate my curiosity, with 28k miles on an 06, what happened to require such intensive work?

when you use the rtv, put it on, then tighten all the bolts by hand. let it dry for 15-20 minutes and then go back and torque everything down

This wasn't the Ranger, it was the Explorer. With 16 years and 157k miles on the original water pump.

Well it held up for a few days, but it's leaking AGAIN.
![]() This is NOT how I wanted to spend my New Year's Eve. And it's a REALLY good thing my mother decided to drive the Accord 20 miles away just now, instead of the Explorer (like she normally does) otherwise I wouldn't have noticed and it would've probably all leaked out on the road...

Me and RTV silicone don't get along. There was a guy who I used to work with that built engines. I was explaining to him an exact episode as you that I had with my Mustang. The RTV kept blowing out after an hour or two of use. He said "quit using that RTV junk and use Permatex #2 Form-a-Gasket". He told me the RTV starts making a skin as soon as it comes out of the tube, and if it takes you a while to get it all buttoned up, it won't seal properly. The gasket maker never hardens, and is very tacky, I've never seen it blow out. I've been using it for about 12 years ago with no leaks whatsoever. I also always use the gasket.....and put the stuff on both sides.
Here's a link to the stuff. I know it will work, first time if you use this.....no issues. http://www.permatex.com/products/aut..._2_Sealant.htm Last edited by shane96ranger; 12-31-2010 at 12:05 PM. |
