alright, i just bought an 87 ranger extended cab xlt, 2.9 v6 5 speed, 4x4. my issue is itll crank over but wont start. when i turn the key forward i dont hear the "vvvvv" sound from the fuel pump. does it have a dual fuel pump set up? if so, where on the rail should it be?? also is there a certain fuse or relay? where is the relay located?

any help will be appreciated!!

It does have two fuel pumps, one in the tank, and one on the frame rail. I have a standard cab on my Ranger and the fuel pump is on the frame around where the driver's side door is. The fuel pump relay is under the hood on the passenger side between the fender and the air filter box.

ok so the fuel pump relay is the green n black one, i replaced it. still no working pumps. so i jumped the inertia switch by taking a wire and jumping from one side of the plug to the other. still not working. i dont see a fuse for it. is there a fuseable link ( if so what does it look like) i did notice 2 wires going into a fuseable link with a spot for a bolt to go thru, just hanging out by the battery/ starter siloniod area .

i did check for power at the high pressure pump... nothing ( i had the key turned on and i poked with a test light)

so to my understanding i must have a break in the wiring or a possible bad ground right?? if both pumps arent working its gotta be a wiring issue, not a bad pump right

I have had a problem with my Ranger and my Bronco II with fuel delivery and they both sound like your problem. One way you can check to see if the fuel pump is working is by running a wire from the battery to the wire that goes to the pump. The connector for the wire is located somewhere under the brake booster/master cylinder area. If I remember correctly, it's a single red wire. When you put power to it, you should hear the fuel pump buzzing. If you hear the buzzing, then the fuel pump should be fine. With my Bronco II, once I realized the fuel pump was fine, I used a continuity tested and traced the problem back to the inertia switch, changed it out, and it works fine now. With my Ranger, well, I had to change the computer because I don't think it wasn't grounding the fuel pump like it was suppose to. I hope this helps, good luck.

well i played with it today and found i have a bad inertia switch.. junkyard here i come

Ok so interia switch is good, fuel pumps good. Relay was replaced. Stilno power going to inertia switch. If i jump the switch to 12v it starts.are there any fuseable links or anything i cant think of?? All the wiring looks good??? So im not getting power to the inertia switch..help

Ground the fuel pump test at the diagnostic connector. If the pumps work, then it's something to do with the computer ground or the computer may not be grounding the relay for whatever reason.

Reconnect the wire you are asking about in your other thread, to the starter relay, this will fix it.

still nothing.... i checked the relays from the fuel pump to the starter silinoid. the big red wire goin to the fuel pump, has power goin in but no power comning out, replaced it, still the same, the relay on the passengers side that gets power from the starter silinoid, has power goin in but nothin coming out . if i go to the fuse box and have a jumper wire from there to the inertia switch i hear the fuel pump work n it starts but the high pressure pump doesnt do the short vvvvv sound it stays on. im aqt a losss now,

would the eec relay be bad???? where is it in relation to the fuel pump relay???

Should have +12v at the fuel pump relay, can't remember exactly on an '87, but it will be a yellow or yellow/black wire. This is the fused power that flows to the pump once the relay is turned on.

The control side - W/ key on run, the red wire is hot once the eec relay turns on. If there is no power on the red wire, ecc relay is not coming on or fuse is blown or even not getting juice from the ignition switch or bad ground or bad relay and you need to look at the eec relay. The ecc relay ground is usually a small circular connector from the battery " - " terminal I think for that year.

If you have power at both of these places, computer may not grounding pump relay or relay is defective. Computer gound can be supplemented at the diagnostic connector for testing the fuel pump circuit.

On the fuel pump relay i have power at the yellow wire and no power at the red wire.
