Since the 36 Ford kit is no longer around, I am wondering about the v8 swap. But I would like to know MPG on these things, as it is still a backup vehicle. What all do you guys get? Good enough for road, or just down at the track?

Thanks

I think it all depends on how you build it, your rearend ratio, whats trans you use, etc. I'm expecting about 20 on the highway with my 302 swap, the engine I'm using got 17 (when driven nicely) with a 3-spd behind it in a '74 Maverick, my truck weighs slightly more but will have a AOD behind it and taller gears.

'92 5.0 HO EFI, T5, 3.55 gears, mid twenties mpg. Way better than any v6 Ranger I've owned.

I average about 25 or so when I take it easy and 17 or less when I get on it.....which might I add is hard not to do!!!!

Thanks guys, keep it coming. All I can do now is research, not enough free time due to work.

I proudly get 12-14 city, 16-17 hwy

My old combo got 21 mpg's a mild 306, aod trans with 3.55 gears. New only get 15-17 347, aod trans with 4.30 gears i'm sure it would get better but i cant keep my foot off the floor.

I get better mileage when i drive it like i did with the 4.0.
About the same when i beat on it. (and i was not easy on the 4.0)

My first 5.0 swap Ranger averaged 25 MPG. 95 EFI crate motor, World Class T5, 3.55 gears, etc.

The following is a brief outline.

I completed my first project in 1997 on a 1993 Splash (see photos below). Back in 1997 EFI V8 Ranger swaps were still a little new and build information was a bit more difficult to come by. The internet was just starting to catch on and many of the Ranger forums had yet to be conceived. Things have come a long way over the past 13 years. Now much of the necessary technical info is a few short key strokes away.

The first project was intended to be used as a courier vehicle in and around the Tampa Bay area of Florida. At the time of the conversion the 93 Splash already had 185,000 light duty courier miles. I collected new parts from around the country to include a World Class T-5, Ford Motorsports 5.0 crate motor, new EFI harness, 8.8 rear end with 3:55 gears, etc. At the time I was a bit concerned as Florida still had emission testing. But with a few reservations the project moved forward and the final product was perfect for the role it was designed for. The 5.0 93 Splash rolled through the Tama Bay area every day for another four years before it was pulled from service. Total distance driven at that time was 395,000 miles, 210,000 miles being after the V8 swap. Some of you from around the area may remember the little V8 ranger with the 1965 Shelby GT350 paint scheme. For those of you who may never have seen it in person you may have seen the photo of my shifter set back used in the Harwood Manual.
