I have a 2001 Ranger. A couple of years ago I noticed that the steering wheel was vibrating a lot when I applied the brakes. I had the brakes checked out, the wheel cylinders in the rear brakes was leaking causing the rear brakes to essentially never work, all stopping was done only with the front brakes. The rotors were warped on the front brakes. I had the rotors turned and new brake pads on the front brakes and the wheel cylinders on the rear brakes were replaced.
Now I'm noticing a similar problem again. The guy told me when he turned the brake rotors that they were at spec and couldn't be smoothed out any more. I'm not sure how many miles I have put on the truck since I had this brake work done, maybe 20K. I suppose the rotors are warped again and need to be replaced. Do you think the rotors just got warped on their own, or do you think the rear brakes may not be working properly again causing the front brakes to do all the work again? Or do you think 20K miles on thin rotors is about right? Or could the vibrations be caused by something else? On a somewhat related note, do you have any estimate as to what it would cost to have the rotors replaced, ballpark figure? Thanks |

When you machine rotors down to minimum spec they are more likely to warp as they are thinner. With how cheap rotors are I just replace them instead of machining.
