That is how hot my floor got in my BII on the way home from work. Right by the gas pedal. Rest of floor was around 165. I had a laser temp gun in the truck and wondered how hot it was. Air temp at 6PM was 99. Engine temp was 200. Passenger side was around 165 also. I have a 3in body lift on and stock exhaust. Doesnt that seem a little high?
 
What from, the catalytic converter?
 
The only thing that can generate a lot of heat right there is a slipping automatic transmission or clutch. The catalytic converter is on the passenger side.
 
I don't know how hot it was in Lexington yesterday, but it got up to 103-104 degrees in Huntington, WV. Add in hot asphalt, a truck that could have been sitting all day and it easily could be into the 150 degree range although 177 seems high. Have you checked the insulation on the firewall lately?
 
That ought to be easily testable.

Park the car for an hour in the sun and see if the floor is still that hot....

Somehow, I'm very doubtful that the UNDERSIDE of the car can get much above ambient.
 
The truck is a 5 sp and the clutch is not slipping. I know that it is not the catalytic converter. The truck was 111 with windows down and parked in the shade when I got in to leave work. There is no insulation on the firewall.
 
Ouch, Don't drive without shoes. Could you have a manifold leak?
 
Interesting thought. Not the manifold though. The Y-pipe might be loose or cracked. You can feel around there with the truck idling, for the exhaust blowing around (though of course touching the Y-pipe is not a good idea...). It also makes a distinctive sound.
 
Have you rmoved the heat shields or are they missing? If you don't already have one in place, add one. The floor in my 85 Ranger used to get very hot as well. I added some adhesive heat wrap to the floor before I put down the sound deadener and now I could drive around in bare feet without feeling the heat of the exhaust through the floor. Give Dynamat a try too. It's expensive but it works wonders for unwanted sound and excessive heat.
 
The Y pipe didnt not make a good seal. When I pulled the 4.0 out of the Explorer I broke one of the screws from the Y pipe to manifold. I drilled it out and put a through bolt in. The bolt had the markings of a grade 8. The bolt bent and Y pipe came loose a little. The Y pipe didnt fit great before. Today I went and got a new grade 8 bolt and some exhaust sealant. Bolted everything together. Waited a couple of hours to let the sealant set and then drove to the store a couple blocks a way. Truck was very quiet and drove fine. On the way home it started to run rough. Now I cant get it to start. Any clues. Did the sealant mess up th O2 sensor. This stuff is called Versa Chem and come from Oreillys Auto.
