Default Outlook Express Malfunction

Help I have Windows XP and 2003 microsoft Outlook Express. Been working fine until today. When i open to get emails it downloads 3or 4 messages then closes. Each time I reopen it repeats the process. Any ideas and solutions thanks.

Is this Outlook Express or Microsoft office outlook?
If it is Outlook Express and you have a Windows XP installation disk you could try inserting the disk, closing out of the box that initially comes up and going to start, run and typing in there sfc /scannow and letting that run.
