Default 2000 explorer 4.0 transmission??

My best friends 2004 Pontiac Grand Am GT took a complete engine dump on him. I really feel for the guy because it was fully loaded and the only nice car he has ever had(last car was 87 Buick century painted primer and rust if I recall). The Pontiac decided to take a dump at a respectable 165,000 miles(respectable for GM anyway). His mom told him he can have her 2000 Ford Explorer but it needs a new transmission. I wanna get this guy is an RBV guys!!!
Here is the thing. I'm thinking try a pull-a-part and then have a mechanic install a low mileage junkyard transmission. What transmission does this truck get? I wish I can see but he lives in Mississippi for now.

BTW Im trying to do convince him to go this route by getting everything priced out!!
