I have a 1994 ranger 4x4 automatic with the 4.0. When I shift it from park to reverse there is a fairly good "clunk" sound. But when I shift from park to drive it doesnt do it. Also when the truck shifts from first to second there is a "clunk" most of the time. Any idea why this is? Thanks

heres what I found with my 2wd, feather tap the gas pedal just about 50-75 rpms during shift. My Rwd does the same thing, if you put your foot on the gas just a tiiiny bit while the computer is engaging gear, it will shift fine.

when i lie under the truck i can rock the transmission and transfer case up and down like 3/4 inches. is that normal or could it be causeing the clunking?

Good question. I have found pretty much the similar thing. I have a 1996 ranger 4x4 automatic with a 4.0. When I shift it from drive to reverse there is a fairly good clunk sound. But when I shift from park to drive or reverse to drive it doesn't do it. I do not have a clunk when the truck shifts from first to second.

I just bought the rig so I am not sure if this is potentially serious or normal. I did drive another 98 which had a good clunk whenever you shifted it from park and whenever you started and stopped so I am thinking that my problem is not serious, but I do not want it to develop into something worse.

Transmission mount... I've replaced 3 on my Camaro and it did that exact same thing...

In that case, think trans mount. NO, it is not normal to lift an attached trans 3/4 inch. it should be relatively solid.

A clunk is not normal. The sound means metal is being impacted against metal. The 98 has a TSB from Ford for the clunk coming from the driveline.

Well normal as in typical of these transmissions, not normal as in it is okay to ignore it. Do you have a link for the TSB?

I did get under it this past weekend and I looked for worn/loose mounts and I had my wife go through the gears while I watched from underneath. Nothing appears to be loose. I did get a filter kit and I am going to replace the fluid, but I didn't get to it yet.

I did some more checking on that TSB and I found some more information, on TRS and other sources. First I think I found the TSB that I was interested in http://www.justanswer.com/uploads/fordguy4u/2008-04-24_111552_TSB_02-13-8.pdf and I found a link from the TRS to this site which discusses it further http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/9/343/article/Common_Fix_For_4r55e__5r55e_Transmissions_With_A_Bad_Separator_Plate_And_Valve_Body_Gasket.html . I think that my description of the problems and issues that I was facing were not accurate and the longer I have the truck (since I just purchased it) the more I understand it. Anyway what is described in the TSB as "delayed engaements" is what I seem to be experiencing. Not much of a metal on metal clunk as it is a clunk when the tranny finally engages. I plan on looking into this more.
