i have a 89 ford ranger 4x4 super cab with 2.9 have a 4.0 out of a 2002 explorer wandering if this swap would be more problems than worth

Depends on how much money or time you want to spend on it... I wouldn't try it, I'd get a 4.0 from a 91-94 Explorer...
