Ok , i am pretty ignorant when it comes to this , but what axles came in fullsize Bronco's ?

The truck i am referencing is a 1995 Bronco XLT New York State Police Edition , it has a 351W , Automatic , and manual T-case ( at one point all new york state police vehicles were fords cruisers were crown vic's , bronco's for off road duty , and lx 5.0 notchback mustangs for chase cars )

i am asking because a friend of mine got this truck for free , he is putting the engine in his f-150 , and i have the opportunity to buy both axles for about 150

the questions are

1.What Axles Are They ?
2. Will they bolt into my Explorer ?
3. Will my 4.0/5-spd be able to handle them ?
4.Can i use my stock T-case ?

1. It would have a dana 44 TTB front with a ford 31 spline 8.8 rear
2. You would have to do ALOT modding to get the d44 to fit in your ranger (the ranger is IFS)
3. You tranny and engine would be fine with them
4. Yes you could use your stock t case

well these are for my 91 Explorer

Duurrr...my bad..

it will still take some modding - 4x4junkie has swapped a ttb d44 into his ranger, so he'll probably have the best answers.

Yes, D44 TTB and 31-spline 8.8"

The D44 can bolt into your pivot brackets, but some modification will be needed with the radius arms and coil mounts being that the axle is wider.

There is also about a 2" difference laterally in the spacing of the pivots between the fullsize and your Ex, so you would have to do one of 3 things:
  • Lengthen the D44 TTB beams 1" each at the pivots (IMO, best option)
  • Drill a new hole 1" inboard of the existing holes on your pivot brackets (requires there be enough room to put a new hole in)
  • Bolt the axle in as is and trim the passengerside shaft(s) down 1-2" (this will result in a slight narrowing of the axle's total width)

The stock Bronco steering linkage MAY be useable, although be prepared to do a little fab work just in case (this would likely be for the better anyway, the stock Y-steering isn't all that great).

You might try searching back a ways too, there should be a few past D44 TTB swap posts as well.

The 8.8" Bronco rear can be treated much like you would the Explorer 8.8" swap (will require moving of the leafspring perches and possibly the shock mounts).

I do have a D44 TTB in my Ranger. Regrettably I narrowed it though, taking away much of the benefit it would've had over the original D35.

junkie , can you elaborate on how to lengthen the beams at the pivots and , correct me of i am wrong , the pivot brackets are where the ends of the beams bolt to the frame rails , right , sorry for me asking all these stupid questions , but even when i owned a ttb truck , i never really went that in depth into the suspension

i only ak all these because i want to do it right the first time , and i am new to full width axles , but like i said i am getting these dirt cheap , and they only have 70k miles on them ( albeit they are extremely hard miles , the way the troopers treat there vehicles , i would never even treat my worst enemy's vehicle like that )

well it now went from 150 for both axles to free for both axles , waiting till spring to pull them off the truck

I dont understand why that would need changed due to the bronco axle being wider already. adding this would make it stick out even further

Did you read my post above?

The spacing of the pivots is different. Lengthening the beams compensates for this so the track width remains the same as before.

and if i lengthen them as shown above i will be able to use the stock spring and shock mounts , right ?

just trying to cover all my bases

You can use the stock coil buckets, but they will need to be spaced out off the frame at least 1", maybe 2" to line up with the axle's mounts properly. You might also look into using '79down Ford coil mounts, too. IIRC, these stick out a bit further than the stock RBV ones, and wouldn't need to be spaced out quite as far (and would better accept a flexier coil too, such as those made for early Broncos).

ok , that wont be a problem then , i got friends with all sorts of goodies i can salvage
