Extensions and a U-joint socket. Attack from where the transfer case or driveshaft was before you removed it.

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
Lower the tailshaft a little and use several socket drive extensions hooked together to give you about a 3 or 4 foot -long extension. It's possible, just barely, to work from the top with a wrench, but the super-long ratchet/socket extension method works best.

At the wreckers I used a box end wrench from the top. Easier than I thought. At home, air tools.

Also, A helpful tip. before you put it back in cut and pound up the pinch weld above the tranny. It will give more room.
