After ruining an engine at the county fair mud bog, I came to terms that the factory intake set-up just won't work with any type of muddy or wet wheelin.
I usually have to replace a mud-packed airfilter at least twice a month. The other day while sitting on the "thinkin stool" I came up with this.
I removed the intake before the airbox. Had to cut off the tabs on the side of the airbox. Then I took the piece that comes out of the airbox, cut it down and flipped it over and put it back in. I siliconed around where that piece goes in, and all but one of the drain holes in the bottom of the air box. Then I plugged off the vacuum line for the warm-up circuit and put it all back together.
*Note* This is mud/water resistant, not proof. Essentially it's just removing the intake from behind the grill and making it much less likely to get crud in your engine.
*Note*You might have a small power loss due to the "hot air" induction. However It is very worth it concidering I just replaced an engine that had it's rings and bearings eaten by mud, and I dont want to cut a hole in my fender for a snorkel(yet).
Not exactly what you wanna see in your airbox
