After ruining an engine at the county fair mud bog, I came to terms that the factory intake set-up just won't work with any type of muddy or wet wheelin.
I usually have to replace a mud-packed airfilter at least twice a month. The other day while sitting on the "thinkin stool" I came up with this.

I removed the intake before the airbox. Had to cut off the tabs on the side of the airbox. Then I took the piece that comes out of the airbox, cut it down and flipped it over and put it back in. I siliconed around where that piece goes in, and all but one of the drain holes in the bottom of the air box. Then I plugged off the vacuum line for the warm-up circuit and put it all back together.

*Note* This is mud/water resistant, not proof. Essentially it's just removing the intake from behind the grill and making it much less likely to get crud in your engine.

*Note*You might have a small power loss due to the "hot air" induction. However It is very worth it concidering I just replaced an engine that had it's rings and bearings eaten by mud, and I dont want to cut a hole in my fender for a snorkel(yet).

Not exactly what you wanna see in your airbox

I did something similar but added some tubing from Home Depot (very inexpensive) then plumbed it into the firewall to get it's needed air from the cowl. Cut a hole in that access plate & welded the tube to it. it can easily be removed for wiper transmission repairs if needed. Been running it that way since '02. Didn't notice any power loss or any gain, runs the same.

I did that after running certain trails where we have to cross rivers. Never hydrolocked but the air filter would get soaked & worried me............so I took the worry away. If I get deep enough in a flowing river to where the cowl is covered in water...........I've got bigger problems than a hydrolock situation, like learning how to play U-Boat Commander.

looks similar to how the tj airbox's are set up."u-boat commander" thats funny thumper!thats how i feel about my snorkle.

Thumper do you have a 3" bodylift? Cause IIRC I don't have room there to go into my cowl through that access panel.

Yup, a 3" b/l. I did this before the b/l though. That tubing allows it to be twisted to just about any position, I went with that just for that reason instead of a solid bent piece. There was enough room over the plenum but.................just enough.

love the setup, what exactly is that piping for and is it a 1 piece pipe? also how did you attach it to the airbox?

you have a different set up because yours is older, you have to do like i did and go out between the inner and outer fender and connect to the cowl thru the side. its not too bad to do and it works great
