i need help with my explorer, i think the neutral safety switch is out but i cant find it on the vehicle to replace:no2:

does anyone know where the neutral safety switch is on a 91 ford explorer 4.0 5spd? any tips and tricks in replacing it would be greatly appreciated...

I believe the neutral SENSOR is on the right side of the top cover of the transmission (neutral "safety" switches are used on automatics).

Is the starter not working? If so, I'd be looking at the clutch pedal position switch instead.

Junkie has the location correct and he is correct in what you should be looking at.

You can find CPP (Clutch Pedal Position) switches all day long on eBay.

how do i access it? from the top or the bottom?? go in from the interior??? thanks for the help

neutral safety switch location???

There is a pic of what it looks like. Just stick your head down there under the dash on the driver side and you will see it behind the clutch pedal. Here are some generic instructions for replacing it.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the connector at the switch by flexing the retaining tab on the switch housing and withdraw the connector.
3. Rotate the switch 1/2 turn to expose the plastic retainer.
4. Push the tabs together to allow the retainer to slide rearward and separate from the switch.
5. Remove the switch from the pushrod.
6. Fit the switch to the master cylinder pushrod.
7. Install the plastic retainer.
8. Rotate the switch into the position to attach the clip. Reconnect the switch connector.
9. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

hey thanks man....i think that i have a neutral safety switch then....bastards sold me the wrong thing even though i told them i had a 5spd:temper:

Your truck also does have a neutral safety switch. The M50D's had them until '95.

I highly doubt it is a neutral safety switch though.

I think I might have a CPP (Clutch Pedal Position) switch that is a brand new Ford part. Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

The "Neutral Safety Switch" is a threaded switch with a wire pigtail coming off of it that is like about 8 inches long. It's on the upper right side of your transmission and you can see it from underneath the vehicle. The wire pigtail wraps around the rear part of your top cover to come over to the left side of the vehicle where it plugs into the harness. If you're having a problem with your truck not starting and they gave you a Neutral Safety Switch you might want to just return that and get the CPP switch because replacing the Neutral Safety Switch isn't really going to help.
