Ok So I just bout an '08 ranger with a 4.0 and 5 speed, with 200 miles on the clock I ordered my hurst shifter. The shifter went in perfect, shifts great and sounds good when shifting. My problem is in third and fourth gear the stick rattles like crazy. First, second and fifth are nice and silent. There is a bit of play in the stick in the center. I dynamatted around the shifter and did my best to mute most of the noise but its kinda irritating to drive around with the windows up and unless Im keeping pressure on the stick it just rattles like crazy. Anyone else have a similar problem? It makes an aweful lot of noise for a $200 shifter. I had a billet plus in my mustang and loved it so thats why I ended up buying another hurst.
Any info would be appreciated. |

yeah, they aint as quiet as the stock unit, look at how the stock unit was made, it effectivly cancelles noise and is better insulated. make sure your stop bolts contact the shifter stub properly. dont preload them. you want it to be fully in gear. mine is the most quiet in 5th. its not as bad as it used to be after 2 years (about 20-30 K miles) of useage but its a definite improvement over the stock setup. i didnt use any insulation around the shifter under the boot. i figured id hold heat in and id rather have a little noise than cause a problem due to retaining heat.
