My son has a 1990 2.9 5spd 4x4. The engine is about done. What was the first year of the 4.0 and would this be the simplest swap? Are there any problem spots we're going to run into?

'90 or '91 was the first year of the 4.0L in Rangers.( I think '90)

Easiest way to go about it is to get a complete doner truck of the same year, then you will have everything needed.

Not real easy to come across a complete truck for a decent price. I can pick up an engine for $300.00 and rebuild it for another $400.00 I'd never find a pickup for under $1500.00

You'll need much more than just an engine for the swap. Its been covered a couple times on here, Search for it, and you'll find more info than you'll need.

I went thru the search thing and read lots. Most of the swaps were later model engines. I had hoped maybe some of the close to same year trucks/engines would make it easier.
Maybe I'll just pick up a 2.3 Diesel and stuff in it. Been thru that already, and at least it does away with the computer wiring issues.

you pretty much need to gut the engine compartments and rewire it with the 4.0l harness.its a big help if you buy the factory electrical manuals(EVTM's) for yours and the donor truck off of e-bay.you need the tranny from the 4.0l also
