has anyone tryied swapping an xj 44 in to an rvb. i have one now and would like to know of any problems that any one has run into.

why a 44? i'd sell it to a jeep freak and get a 8.8 so the e-brake,sway bar,and speed sensor all hook up

xj 44

1. it was free
2. i already have it
3. and the xj 44 IS stronger than the 8.8 (no c-clips and all that crap)
4. the bolt patern is the same.

I'm pretty sure an XJ 44 has c-clips as well...not to mention, didn't they have a crappy aluminum housing or something?

XJ D-44 is definitely not c-clip. I have never heard of the aluminum thing, but any XJ that had a D-44 was older and in no way aluminum.

That would make sense as the ZJ (Grand Cherokee) had the D-44 well into the 90's. In fact I think right up to the body style change it was available. What about the Rubicon axles? I saw a rollover at the body shop my Auto Group has the other day. Manager says its a total.

d44

jason you are correct on the zj d44 in most respects the d44hd or aluminum center cectioned d44 was also put under the wj's which was the body change in 04. it was a c-clipped axle, but with disc brakes helping some with the c-clip issue.

You are correct about the bolt pattern, but an 8.8 (31 spline) is stronger than a stock XJ dana44. It is a little wider than an 8.8, might have issues clearing the gas tank. Other than that it should work alright.

Grand cherokees weren't introduced until '93, the early ones had mostly dana35 with some being dana 44's, the later ones were mostly 44's. As for the Rubi axles, Dana 44 rear, ARB lockers front and rear (although lower air pressure than standard ARB's) and a Dana 44 center section in the front with Dana 30 outers. Jeep guys will jump all over those things.

The jeep guys will jump, but right now they don't know about the truck.

sell the d44 as its worth about 600 to a XJ guy. Buy a 31 spline 8.8 its stronger.

+1

C-clips don't mean jack crap when it comes to axle strength, only what happens AFTER something breaks (and disc brakes ('95-'01 Ex 8.8s) make a moot point out of that as well).
