Hey there, I forgot my old login for here so I registered again... anyway.. been around Rangers for a very long time...

Now my question, I'm looking at buying another Ranger, an '85 4x4. But, the VIN number indicates that the truck should be a 2wd. It very clearly is not.

Does anybody know if the VIN could in fact be incorrect?

So it says R10 instead of R11?

I would suspect that maybe the cab was changed, VIN plate changed, etc. before I would suspect an error on Ford's part.

Exactly. The VIN lists R10 instead of R11.

The other half of the VIN being correct though is what's throwing me off though, if the cab were swapped then the VIN would be entirely wrong (most likely).

The truck has the 2.3L Diesel in it, which the VIN indicates correctly. So now I'm just more confused... haha

I actually didn't know there was a 4X4 version of the diesel. I thought they were all 2wd.

I suppose someone could have gone through the hassle of swapping it over to a 4X4.

2.2 Perkins were all 2wd iirc. 2.3 Mitsu's could get 4wd. My bet is a swap.

Side note: Does it matter?

Could be a frame swap, could be a cab swap, could just be the wrong VIN. We just had to get a new VIN plate installed on a C-Max because it was wrong. It said the car was blue, when it was clearly white, and didn't match the frame or floor tags.
