I have a 2003 ford ranger 2wd pickup and on my way home i noticed that it was harder to shift gears. I recently got this truck so i figured the previous owner did shitty maintenance. i got tranny fluid and was going to change the fluid and as im backing out i hear a loud whining/tapping sound it sorta sounds like putting little rocks in a soda can and shaking it. My first reaction is "oh **** this tranny is done". so I changed the fluid and what came out was a quart and a half of black fluid. Did anybody experience this before? Am i in need of a new tranny? If so what tranny is compatible with my truck? Its a 2003 2wd 4cyl.
 
Fill it with the correct fluid/oil.....drive it for a week (UNLESS IT CONTINUES TO MAKE NOISES!).........THEN change the trans fluid again & drive it.

Is the drain hole big enough to get a magnet or your pinky-finger in there to check for metal particles?

ya pretty sure the hole is big enough. the drain plug is already a magnet so ill be using that. question about the fluid, i dont got the manual can anyone tell me the fluid type? i checked around and they all seem to be saying to use mecron atf can anyone confirm?
 
so i changed the fluid and it still makes that noise when i reverse. Also its still kinda hard to shift gears while driving. any help would be appreciated
 
That is telling you to replace the slave cylinder. I had that problem too. Replace it ASAP before you jack up the transmission even more!!! OR you could bleed it and maybe see if that works and helps your shifting problem. You could have some air in the line and may need to bleed out all of those air bubbles out of it. With air in the line causes the clutch not to engage all the way and cause shifting to be hard to get into gear. If you don't know how to bleed it, report back.

Thanks for the response I was thinking slave cylinder too. What the best way going about bleeding the clutch line? Did you also hear the rattling noise?
 
question about slave cylinder. While observing the slave thru the peep hole in the transmission it looks to be moving the 5/16 inch, but im hearing what sounds like air coming out of a pin hole. is that normal???
