I recently broke my Craftsman bench vise and need to find a replacement. What do the rest of you recommend other than the el cheapo Harbor freight ones that don't seem to hold up very well.

Thanks,
Andrew

record.

the only vice worth buying.

I have a 6" record that I found in a quonset that I was renting. It was broken so I took it in to a place that dealt with record vices and they replaced it no questions asked, worth ~$175.00. I hadn't dealt with that shop before. Because of that I would buy another. Also craftsmen [sears] have a really good lifetime warranty on their mechanics tools and may have the same on their vices, you should check into that before buying. I would also look at one with an anvil built in unless you already own an anvil.

I have a stand built for my anvil with just a small 6in vice bolted on the stand. A rack for hammers and punches... Never beat on a vice.

Vices and anvils... The older the better. My anvil is a blacksmith anvil from 1910 and the vice is old enough to have USA stamped on it haha all that matters. The stand was made in my welder friends garage so I know it's good.
