Default 28/35 Hybrid ?

Ok, I know the beams, knuckles/outers, stubs, third minus the ribs and internal difference from the carrier is all 35. The carrier is a 28, but what are the side gears? Are they 23 spline or 27 spline Dana 35 side gears in a 28 carrier?

I was just wondering if the 28/35 hybrid uses a special inner shaft that is all 35 specs but then tapers down to 23 spline for the side gears. If this were the case then the 28/35 inner would be really hard to source and the weak point in my mind would not be the 28’s ring and pinion but the 23 spline shaft ends.

The Ring and Pinion, carrier etc is all true dana 28. The inner shafts that slide into them are weird part, and I think this is what you're asking. They fit the D-28 guts, and as they exit the housing they taper to match D-35 specs. As for what size the shaft seals are on the housing, not sure, but i know the inner shafts taper out to D35 specs. I'd think this would be hard to source an inner shaft. I hope I never break one of mine. LOL

Ok so then it is a 35 inner that tapers down to 23 spline.

Like I said, I really hope I don't have to replace one. They seem like they'd be hard to source. Junkyard would be about the only bet. I'll get under there tonight and look at it again and take measurments, just to be sure. This has got me thinking.

Yes it tapers like said before, and it uses the bigger d35 U-joints.
