Hey,

Im new here and I have a few questions about swaping a 5.0 into my 2000 4.0 2WD Manual Ranger. I am looking at a 98 Explorer 5.0 to swap into my truck, but I have a few questions reguarding the vehicle speed sensor, and if the drive shaft will have to be altered if useing a M50D.

I know that the vss for my ranger recieves it's signal from the abs module, but the explorer uses a signal from else where. How do I need to go about setting the truck up so the VSS works?

Also does anyone know of a shop or someone in Charlotte, North Carolina who has done the 5.0 swap and maybe I could ask a few questions and look at their truck to see how everything need to come together?

Thanks

The ex speedo goes from the rear axle vss to the g force transducer to the abs module/pump then sends a corrected signal to the ecu. The ranger goes rear axle abs to the abs module/pump then to the ecu via an uncorrected signal, Iirc. You will need to wire in the g force transducer for the speedo, cruise, and trans to operate correctly. Take a look at my Trac build thread, first post. It will have all the info you need...

Your 2000 Ranger gets the speedometer signal from the sensor in the rearend. You will not need to modify this at all, speedometer will work fine.

The Explorer ECU will want a VSS siganl, but that may or may not already be wired correctly at the 42pin main harness connector.

Driveshaft length will depend on where you place the engine.

I was planing on Useing the stock 5.0 expo motor mounts and according to the pin out I got from ford today the ranger and explore share the same pin at the ecu for the vss does any one have a link to a pin out of the square connector under the hood or could post a pic

Here are both the pin-outs for the 42 pin connector on both. Really do suggest getting the wiring diagrams for both, cheap on Ebay. I haven't checked to see any difference, let us know for future how they look.

Ok so ended up Getting the whole expo for 500 bucks score had to cut the front end off of it guy hit a tree at 35 mph Now the problem I have is do I need to use the harness from the explorer that plugs to the ecu or will the one from my ranger work to keep things a little more simple and thanks to evey one for the info and helping out a noob

Explorer engine/PCM harness (large) - possible minor repinning required
Explorer engine A/C and sensor harness (small) - will need connector mods to match up to Ranger bay harness.
Explorer transmission harness (partial for manual trans use including reverse switch wires and oxygen sensor wires)
Explorer battery cable harness

Everything else is Ranger.

Definitely get EVTM / Wiring Manuals for both donor and project. Cheap on eBay.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the Ex donor is 98 or older, the Ranger will need a return line added to the fuel system. 99~2001 Ex is returnless and compatible with the 2000 Ranger system.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

PATS: 98+ Explorer and 2000 V6 Ranger use the same type PATS system. This is a good thing. 97-back Explorer does not have PATS, so no problems there.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As stated above in this thread, the 2000 Ranger VSS is independent of this swap. VSS to the PCM uses the same #7 pin at the 42 pin 5.0 Explorer and 2000 Ranger connectors. So, no changes needed.
Ok thank you I'm in the process of pullin the expo motor as we speak so every thing is there that I need I'll post some pics when I get it out
When you get a chance, send me a PM with your E-Mail address.
I'll send you the better part of all of the 2000 EVTM in Acrobat files.
Anything not in there that you need, just ask.
I'd offer the Explorer info, but my CD is 2000 only and there might be differences.
Where is the pats mod at in the 98 explorer
I'd "guess" under the PS kick panel, but I'll grab the CD and run it up in the laptop in the house and see, if no-one else replies.
This ;aptop won't run the CD. not sure what the problem is.
