Default Stripped starter bolt

The lower bolt on my starter is stripped and won't tighten, not letting the starter and flywheel make good contact. Can I just get a longer bolt and drive it further into the flange to make it tight again?

I'd get a heli-coil kit.

better question, is it the bolt, or the hole that's stripped?

hole, as ADSM said, heli coil, if it's the bolt, new bolt...

semi related note, where do you get helicoils? i've heard about them, but never seen them at the parts stores... i've got one bolt that holds the reserve tank on my bike, it's stripped and i've been looking for a solution similar to this

Autozone has them here by another brand. Helicoil is a brand name. I think it's called Fix-a-thread.

Sent while I should be doing something else

Yeah look for a "thread repair kit" (about $25-30). Typically they include a drill bit, special thread tap, and some steel coil repair inserts. You can buy the inserts by themselves too, if needed.

A longer bolt might work if there's enough undamaged thread at the bottom of the hole... However it's probably more likely you'll end up having it strip out again though. You'd be harder-pressed to strip it again once the steel insert is in there.

The proper thread to match the original threads and accept the stock bolt
is 10mm x 1.5

I helicoil the starter bolt holes on every 2.9/4.0 trans case that I don't scrap
