I'm getting ready to go on a long trip and want to check the trans fluid. It's a 2002 2wd 2.3L 4 cyl. 5 sp. manual Ranger (sig below). I know when full, the fluid level should be at the bottom of the bolt hole on the trans, but what type/kind of fluid should I add if it needs it? Thanks.

Mercon automatic transmission fluid.

Allen

To be specific, Mazdas up to 87 take gear lube, post-87 take ATF. Always check the manual for the part #.

Gads, just when I knew the answers, they changed the spec.

The rear ends in these things still use gear oil, right? Or have they changed to Hoppes #9 gun oil?

actually they use 30 weight non-detergent motor oil.

kidding. gear oil in the rear.

dude personnaly i would go royal purple only because it is the best out there, it is a little expensive but i would rather have a really good fluid thats made in the US instead of a brand that is made outside the US.

That information can be found in a most unusual place......the owner's manual.
