OK, I'm at my wits end. I'm trying to remove the instrument cluster in my 94 Mazda and I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the speedo cable from the back. All the forum posts I've looked at and the Tech library say that the cable is supposed to have a white clip with a flat piece on it to press -- but mine doesn't. It's just round and silver from the back of the speedo til it hits the cable sheath. I can just barely get my hand in there, but I pulled and got nowhere for like an hour today.

What am I missing (other than the stupid white clip! :icon_confused:)?

Thanks!

I don't know if it's because there old and stiff or what but there hard to do.I was pretty frustrated by the time I got that back.My tab was on top and impossible to see and hard to touch. What helped me is I had a spare dash to cut it out and take a look.

I'm going to try again tomorrow, if it's not raining. I'll at least try to snap a pic if I can get my phone in there.

But let's assume I can't figure it out for a minute. I think I remember reading that you can disconnect the other end to give you some more clearance behind the cluster -- from the transfer case somewhere. Can you give me an idea about where it is on the case? Drivers or passenger side, front or back? The Haynes manual really sucks for this one. The pics all show a 95+ which has no cable and they say if it's 94 or before something stupid like reach behind the cluster and disconnect the cable. Yeah, that helps.

Removal

Disconnect the battery ground cable .

Remove instrument panel ash receptacle (04810) by removing the four screws that attach the instrument panel ash receptacle to the instrument panel .

Remove the left and right A/C register (19893) . Refer to Section 12-02B

Unsnap the instrument panel finish panel by pulling rearward around the edge of the panel.

Depress the hazard warning switch on the steering column tube and remove the instrument panel finish panel .

Remove the four screws securing the instrument cluster to the instrument panel

Vehicles equipped with automatic transmission require the transmission control selector indicator to be removed. Remove the two screws attaching the transmission control selector indicator to the instrument cluster and slide the transmission control selector indicator down and out of the instrument cluster. Leave transmission control selector indicator connections undisturbed.

Pull instrument cluster rearward to gain access to speedometer cable and housing assembly. If there is insufficient access to disconnect the speedometer cable and housing assembly at the instrument cluster, it may be necessary to disconnect at the transmission and pull the speedometer cable and housing assembly out far enough to disconnect at the instrument cluster.

Unsnap the two wiring harness connectors and remove the instrument cluster.

I appreciate the step-by-step -- This is the part I'm having trouble with. No problems with any other prior step in the process.

I have enough access to get my hand in there, but I seem to have no clip to release the cable from the housing. So if I can't figure that out, I'll try to locate the other end of the cable on the transfer case and hopefully disconnect there so I can pull the cluster out far enough to replace the bulbs.

I did manage to get this done today. I realized what happened to the white clip on the speedo cable -- it has come undone from the end of the cable and ended up down at the firewall where the cable goes through. Probably the previous owner did it when he tried to spin back the odometer and broke it instead. There is no way to feed the clip back up through the dash without taking the whole dash apart. Gravity worked wonders getting it down to the floor, but my hands are too big to reach through and grab it. So I undid the other end of the cable from the transfer case. Found it on the backside of the case.

With the cable undone I was able to pull the cluster forward a bit more, undid the two wiring harnesses, and then managed to wiggle the speedo cable loose from the cluster. Got a little dash rash on my arms and some dirt in my hair from crawling under the truck, but it's out.

Now on to the LED light conversion..... :icon_thumby:
