Default 93 tranny issue....I think

I am buying a ranger,and the guy says the tranny is toast. From the tech forum, best guess is it's a M50D-R1. Sounds like the throwout bearing is going out, but he says it pops out of gear. I haven't driven it yet, so I cant tell you the extent of the problem, but is there a known problem with those transmissions?
