Talking Just bought an Interesting Ranger...

We just picked up this Ranger locally for $700.

the very nice lady we bought it from said here son had bought it new back in 91 and took good care of it. She told us it was 4wd but just a little 4cyl and starting to showing its age a bit.

so with out seeing any pictures we went down to look at it...

I dont know much about Rangers, but i know a good deal when i see one.
I would love to know anything you guys can tell me about this little ranger.

Obviously its a v6 now. Any info on what motor would be good, it has braided steel fuel lines and enough hacked wire connectors to make me think this was not its original home.

and then there is the suspension.

its also got shock hoops and 2.5 inch body spacers. the tires on it are 31's we were given two sets of wheels and tires for it. what ever gearing it has right now is fine for those tires, maybe even a little short.

I have spent most of my time wrenching on jeeps. Jackie, the other owner of this truck, has had her self a few escorts, including one thats down to 11.06 on a cosworth motor. But still new to the truck side of ford.

The nice Lady we bought it from claims it does pretty well in the snow.

Looks to me like a 4.0 V6, Can tell by the coil pack. 2.5-3" James Duff Suspension lift which is one of the better available for rangers. The Trans looks to be a M5OD 5spd which is a great transmission. I'd say you got a pretty good deal on it. the spliced wires and be fixed with a complete underhood wiring harness that you should be able to find from a junk yard. Just search for 91-92 ranger with a 4.0 and manual. Also it looks like it has a Dana 35 and 8.8 axles in it which would not have come in a 4cyl so those were either swapped or it is originally a 4.0 truck. You could check the VIN. If those are stock axles probably looking at 3.55 gears which are just dandy with 31s and a 5spd. There should be a tag on the rear axle bolted to the diff cover should see 3 55 or 3 73 or possibly a 3L55 which would suggest a Limited slip but not real common in that era truck.

Any plans for it or just to mess around with?

i like what i am hearing so far.

What am I looking for on the coil packs to confirm 4.0 status. I will be redoing the under hood wiring myself. engine swap harnesses and troubleshooting is my weekend job.

As for build plans, we are starting with rust repair and are probably taking the cab off to coat the frame and under side with implement paint.

after that I am looking to stick bigger tires under it to get the diff a bit higher off the ground and get some better flex out of the front end.

I promised to stop short of changing out the axles on this one. so what ever i can get away with up untill that point i guess. it needs to remain a road going truck and we will be taking it out to the midwest this fall. so everything is with that in mind.

It's a 4.0, I can tell by looking at it. Your vin code should be X for the 4.0 if you want to confirm.

I think the orange sticker on the coil pack says 4.0 on it IIRC.
