Default All wheel drive mustang project.

so i just thought of something brilliant.

Get a foxbody mustang without engine, put 2.9 V6 in it.

import the following front diff/oil pan

graft ranger 4x4 IFS onto mustang frame, get custom half shafts, run explorer awd transfer case, and viola, bargain priced all wheel drive foxbody.

Feel Good Man.

oh and i think the idea's totally sick, but i would suggest a-arms from another common car. not exactly sure what, but the ranger setup might be a little too big and beefy for a fox. but you're definitely on to something. did you see my thread with those crazy turbo euro 2.9s?

it's the front end of something called an XR4x4

basically an all wheel drive V6 euro version of the merkur XR4Ti

I'd go for a Dana V-drive myself.

Thats an interesting setup. I saw one of them a few years ago. Good luck fitting that in a Fox!

Heptofite: A buddy of mine was trying to fit that same setup from a Sierra XR4x4 into his XR4Ti years ago. He joined the Airforce and scrapped the project. I sent him an Email to see what happened to the pan/diff assembly.

Edit: i just remembered, they made 3 different setups. The diff isnt part of the pan, it bolts on. The 2.0l and the 2.9l were the same diff housing, but different gears. (3:62 on the 2.9l and 3:9x on the 2.0l) The 2.8l uses a different diff housing and wont work.

I'd just buy a Ranger 4x4. The work is already done for you.
But now the engine out of the xr4ti, now that is a whole different story! That would bolt right into the ranger. Fred was a member on here a few years ago that did that in his 85 4x4 ranger, it was awesome and he still has it. I have nver been able to find his user on this site, but I work with him and have seen it and it is awesome!

I would just get an AMC Eagle SX4:

I mean, it is essentially what you're trying to build right? a 4x4 sport coupe from the 80's? It has the torque of a 258 (4.2L) inline six, and four wheel drive with solid axles... I know I've always wanted one. It pisses me off when I see a Subaru ad touting how they were "pioneers" in 4x4 station wagons and compact SUV's..... I'm sure the fine people of AMC and Renault would be more than willing to gesture at the historical significance of the Eagle, the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. We probably wouldn't have had Bronco II's or Explorers, or even the whole crossover category if not for AMC...

Rant over....

because that wouldn't weigh a ****load or anything

also, solid axles are a BAD thing, i'm not trying to make a rock crawler, i'm trying to make a track car, it has to corner.

Just take of the Fox body off and put a Subaru 4wd chassis under it. It would be an almost perfect fit. I think that would be cool. I have thought about it years ago when I had my 86 GT and a friend had his 84 Mustang body off the chassis. I brought my 89 Subaru over and we were looking into swapping the Fox body to the Subaru
4wd chassis. After we measured everything it really looked like it could work. We never got around to doing anything....too busy with our SCCA race car builds.

Ideas like turning a car into a truck are what inspired Mike Judge to create Beavis and Butthead.
