Gear Swap Update

Well, I've got my ring & pinion swap done. 97 Ranger 7.5 rear end. I went from a 4.10 ratio to a 4.56. I was considering a 5.30 ratio but i'm glad i didn't. I'm running 235/75R15s (had 225/70R14s originally) and the swap gave just a bit lower final drive ratio without making in undriveable on the E-way. I used the original thickness shims on the pinion & ring carrier the backlash & contact pattern was all right on. Good thing I tore it down too, onr carrier bearing was really pitted. Wouldn't have been long for that! My Ford dealer came up with a 23 tooth speedo gear which put my speedo dead on. Just about to change the diff oil at 500 mi. as per the manufacturers instructions. Thanks for the input on my gear selection guys. You've been lots of help!
 
Good to hear it's working well! (And I'm especially glad because that's what I was doing too lol). I actually had everything lined up this weekend to do mine but I had to go and break my finger yesterday afternoon :annoyed:

So much for that.
 
im starting mine soon, just got all my bearings pressed off and just have to grind out a spare pinion bearing to start test fitting things. did you use a new crush sleeve or did you re use the old one and just make sure you had the proper preload for the new bearings?
 
I used the old chush sleeve initially, and the old pinion nut,tightened the nut to the proper pinion preload(25 inch pounds i think for new bearings) . Thats the drag on the pinion when your turning it,not the tightness of the nut by the way. Installed the ring gear & checked the back lash & contact pattern. Both were right on(luckey me!). Took everything back apart & reassembled it useing a new pinion seal & a new crush sleeve. As i said earlier, everything set up ok useing the original thickness shims. Hope your build goes as smooth!
