4.0 engine swap.....NEED HELP!!!!!!!

swapped the engine from a91 explorer to a 89 broncoII. Got everything in and bolted up, but the engine feels like it is seized up. I can loosen the bottom transmission to engine bolts and a little gap between the engine and transmission, then you can turn the crankshaft with a socket. If everything is tightend up, the crank won't budge. Should I have used the flexplate from the 2.9?? Should I have used the torque converter for the 91 explorer??? Any help would be great!!!!!

Did you put the spacer plate between the block and bellhousing? Sounds to me like that could be the problem. If its not there then the converter could be pushed up tight inside the bellhousing and jamming the crank.

Yes you want the 4.0 flex, torque converter, and starter.

And I am not sure if flex plates have the pilot bearing in the middle like flywheels do. May look into that.

I got it figured out. Turns out the torque converter was not installed all of the way in; had to turn and push the converter to get it to go all of the way in.

Got the engine hooked up and it started!!!! I won't idle, but there are some vacuum line unhooked and the breather assembly is off.

I got the electric windows and power locks worked out as well!!

There are a few connectors that did not get labled, so that will take a little bit to figure out where they go.

Well, the tail lights and gas gauge does not work, time to trace it down and splice it in.

My question today is does any have a pic of how the vacuum cruise control module (hoses) are hooked up??

Should help you out. The one over the top just runs to a port off the intake plenum. the other one that doesn't loop onto itself runs inside the cab.

Edit: Also I have to agree about getting ready for a 5-speed swap. I haven't had my 4.0 in for a month yet and with zero offroad or "hard" driving, over drive is already slipping a little and it was working fine with the 2.9... But I got an FM146 all ready to go in except for master cylinder and pedal assemblies. I know its not the preferred swap but for my wife driving it all the time it will last alot longer than the a4ld.

You'll love it. But x2 on the 5 spd swap. My auto didn't last long. Getting ready to swap in my M5OD pretty quick.
