Hello all,
I'm trying to help my buddy get his truck running again. It's a 85 v6. I'm assuming its a 2.8. Haven't dealt with the older trucks much so I'm semi-lost. So here's the problem. The truck ran fine. Then it was parked for about a month. He went out to start it the other day and it wouldn't start. So he calls me and I ride over. The truck turns over fine, but won't ever hit. I checked spark it looks a lil weak but I might be trying to give it to much credit. Looked down in the carb it's getting fuel. If you turn it over for a few seconds all of a sudden it will let out the loudest backfire I have ever heard from a vehicle. He hasn't had the truck all that long so we are going to go ahead and do plugs and wires. Anything else I should check into?
Sorry for the wall of text.

If you are changing the plugs and wires anyway put it on TDC and make sure the rotor is under no. 1 wire.Bad timing can cause your symtoms.

Which plug would be number 1? And just pull the cap off and check to see if the rotor is facing it? haha i have a very limited knowledge of distributors. Just a little from messing with hondas. I'm probably just going to make him buy a book for the truck.

Nevermind on the cylinder 1 question I found that. Can this motor even jump timing? And on the Distributor which way advances it and which way retards it? Clockwise advance?

I believe counterclockwise advances the ignition, however it prolly varies make to make. I would take teh cover off the dis housing and turnt he motor over, whichever way the rotor turns, then turnin the cover the opposite direction is advancing, if that makes sense. It didnt jump time just from sitting for a month though. Plugs and wires should be the main issues. Also when you take the distibutor apart, you need to clean all the contacts and make sure there is no carbon buildup on the points. Maybe consider a new coil.

If you take off the distributor cap, check that the rotor is turning properly, it's not unheard of for the drive gear to get eaten.

Alright. Well I told him to go ahead and get a rotor and button just because. I'm probably going to try to mess with it tomorrow. So if I get stuck I'll be back lol.
