Air conditioner removal

I just got an '87 Ranger and the air conditioning doesn't work. I really don't need it because I don't drive it much. Is there a procedure to remove it? I'd rather take it off if its not working and I'm not going to use it. I thought I might get a little boost in HP without it.

to remove just have to recover from the refrigerant inside the system otherwise its very easy to remove basic system.With the compressor clutch disengaged, the power draw wouldn't even be measurable

You won't get any boost in power without it. Far better to leave it in place in case you ever decide you actually need it. With the compressor clutch disengaged, the power draw wouldn't even be measurable.

You won't get any more power but having the hoses and compressor out of the way is nice when you work on something. The condenser keeps a little air off the rad as well.

I'm going to take mine off just so I don't have it in the way, the non-AC/heater fan box sticks closer to the firewall.

Honestly does it get that hot up here? Maybe if you have to wear a suit or a kevlar vest everyday there would be times...

The nice thing about the 1st gens. is that the A/C sytem can be removed as an assembled unit. NO discharge or teardown required. The downer is that you need to pull the rad. to get the condensor out. The 2.8 AND the 2.9 share this, and the acc. brackets too.

Use a non-A/c belt? At least if you ever decide to fix it, it's still there.

No need to use a "non A/C" belt on his setup. He can simply remove the belt and call it good. Ahh, the joys of a NON serp. set up. P.S. You can also get away with using the same belt for a spare for either the alt OR the PS on these.
