My Post Hole Digger doesn't need a computer, but I'd suggest you look at ones that are waterproof and have very high shock absorbancy...
Oh, you meant PhD...in that case, you might want to check out either HP or Acer models...and narrow it down...but unless you're doing a post grad studies on something that requires massive processing power...such as to run a program that simulates how the brain works...I'd say any of the mid range to top of the line should suffice... You might want to be a bit more specific though...a PhD can require little or no special features from a computer... And you might take a look at this one...DBurton just got it (see the recent thread) and loves it...

Check out Asus. I got mine last year and I love it. It came with a 2 year drop warranty. Asus makes most of the motherboards for the other manufacturers but the difference is Asus uses topline interior components. They may cost a little more but you can't make a $700 laptop with top shelf components.

I use a Phree Dell Latitude D600 that a buddy of mine built for me from the carcasses of several other lappys that their sales staff (ab)used for work.
I love it.

That's like asking what's the best flavor of icecream.
Hundreds of different computers on here, hundreds of different opinions. Find one that does what you need within your budget. That said, if I hate someone I'll point them to an HP. I like Toshibas (I've had 6) but YMMV. I have an NB205 Netbook now that is what I've been needing for years. It nicely bridges the gap between PDA and full computer, except that it IS a full computer minus the optical drive. Does everything I need when on the go, is smaller than a thick magazine, and the battery lasts an honest 8+ hours.

yeah i have a macbook and it is easily the nicest computer i have ever used. i previously only used windows machines, namely dell, but i was thoroughly dissatisfied with them. I decided to give Mac a try and it was the best decision ever. try a regular macbook if u don't plan on too much intensity of work or a macbook pro for more power.

I'd get a Dell. I have an Asus, which is great, but Dell's seem to have a better build quality than most. My Asus runs really well, though, and it stays cool. My friend has a Dell XPS Studio and it's extremely well made and it works great, though it's not cheap.
